Cool it down

LET'S PLAY:

GET READY: You will need several blank sheets of paper, a pen and a timer. If you are doing this activity as a whole class, then invite your teacher to be your timer.

GET SET: There are six trigger words below. Write down every word and phrase that comes to your mind when you look at each trigger word. Use a separate piece of paper for each trigger word, to give yourself plenty of space. You may go in any order but you must do all six trigger words in 10 minutes. Link each of your words to its trigger word with a line. An example, for the trigger word "DURIAN", is given at the bottom.

STOP after 10 minutes.

THINK ABOUT IT. Take a look at all the words you have linked to the trigger word. You may be surprised by how many different ideas can come from each little trigger word. Well, what you see is a little like what goes on in a person’s brain when the person hears a word. People can hook all sorts of meanings onto the words you use. When you speak, one way to make yourself clearer is to explain what you say with full sentences rather than to use only single words or brief phrases. Speaking in full sentences gives your listeners more clues to help them figure out what exactly you mean.
