How President Tony Tan cooled it down
The last Presidential Election was a heated affair. Four candidates went all out to win people’s votes. During an election, candidates always criticise one another. When the election is over, however, it is time to make peace.
So, after Dr Tony Tan won, he did not use any fighting words. He was gracious to his opponents. "I also want to thank the other three candidates, who have campaigned with vigour, because they have given Singapore a choice," he said after the results were announced.
"Vigour" means energy. Dr Tan was complimenting the effort that his opponents put in. Saying something positive about them was a good way to reach out to Singaporeans who did not vote for him.
